Wood Carving

Gustavian Chair

This chair is made in birch with traditional fixed tenon joints. The form is inspired by the Gustavian chairs at Gunnebo Castle, but is not a copy of any single original. Instead it is a personal interpretation of the Gustavian idiom, with a focus on craftsmanship, proportions and ornamentation.

The seat rail and back are decorated with leaf moulding ornaments. The front legs are hand-turned. The gadroon was first carved separately, then glued on and turned to completion so that it becomes an integrated part of the leg's form.

The back legs are turned in one piece, which required eccentric turning using a home-made jig inspired by Fritz Spannagel's methods. The fluting on the legs was milled on the lathe using a custom indexing plate and milling jig.

The chair is finished with two coats of home-mixed linseed oil paint, giving the surface a traditional expression and allowing the craftsmanship to come through in a quiet way. The result is a chair where classical inspiration meets personal execution and technical problem-solving.
